Cosmetic improvements made to our physical appearance can take us far in life. When we look
good, we feel good, and this can improve our self-confidence, social interactions, and even job opportunities. Enhancing your smile is perhaps the most powerful cosmetic option because our smiles are the first thing others notice about us. At Evergreen Dental Group, we want you to be proud of your smile. This is why we offer veneers in Omaha, NE.
What are veneers?
This procedure entails attaching very thin, tooth shaped ceramic “shells” over the front of an unattractive tooth. This allows patients to hide any variety of minor imperfections in their smile. Many patients and celebrities alike trust this procedure to give them the flawless and stunning smile they want.
Benefits of Veneers
There are many reasons that our patients choose this procedure. It can mask dental flaws such as:
- Stained teeth
- Slightly misaligned teeth
- Broken teeth
- Chipped teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Oddly shaped teeth
- Teeth that need to be elongated
How does it work?
Like many other procedures, patients undergoing this cosmetic procedure must first schedule a consultation with Dr. McCaslin. During the consultation, Dr. McCaslin will determine whether the patient is a candidate for the treatment based on their oral health and needs. Then, the color, size and shape of the veneers are chosen.
Preparing the Teeth
After the appearance of the porcelain shells is determined, Dr. McCaslin must “etch” the surface of the tooth. This process roughens up the surface to help the shell adhere and also makes room for the material in the mouth in order to avoid a bulky smile. This part of the process is generally painless, but anesthesia can be administered if the patient is uncomfortable.
Designing and Placing the Veneer
Because we use CEREC technology, the entire process can be completed in just one sitting. Once the tooth is prepared, our 3D imaging system will take multiple images of the tooth to create a digital replica of the veneer. This digital image is then sent to the milling unit. The milling unit is where the veneer is actually created. A small block of ceramic is chosen based on it’s color and placed into the milling unit. The machine then molds the block into the perfect, customized veneer needed. Once created, Dr. McCaslin can attach the veneer directly to the tooth using dental cement.
Am I a candidate?
If a patient is interested in getting this cosmetic procedure, Dr. McCaslin must first determine that you are a good candidate. Not everyone should have these porcelain, thin shells attached to a natural tooth. Here are some reasons why Dr. McCaslin may decide that you are not a good candidate:
- You are in poor general health
- You have advanced periodontal disease
- Your dental flaws require a different treatment
- You are not willing to cover the cost (this procedure is considered a cosmetic procedure and often is not covered by insurance)
Are Veneers Permanent?
Yes. A portion of the natural tooth’s enamel is removed which means the process is irreversible. The natural tooth will always need to be protected by a veneer. Thankfully, with good care, this procedure can last up to 10 or even 15 years. Scheduling regular check ups with your dentist also helps increase the life of your veneers. Because they are permanent and cannot be modified, Dr. McCaslin strongly suggests whitening your teeth before the procedure if you are interested in whitening treatments. The ceramic material of a veneer cannot be whitened and will produce and uneven shade if whitening is performed after placement.
How to Care for Veneers
Although the procedure is permanent and the porcelain shells can last up to 15 years, the way that you care for them determine their longevity. Here are some tips on how to care for them:
- Avoid extremely hard or sticky foods that can damage them
- Do not use your teeth to open things and drop bad habits such as chewing on nails or ice
- Clean them as your normally would- brush and floss twice daily
- Use a non-abrasive toothpaste and a soft bristle toothbrush to avoid scratching them
- See your dentist regularly and always tell your dentist if you have veneers so that he can clean the tooth accordingly
